Habitat for Humanity organizes Women Build | News, Sports, Jobs
MARQUET — “Breaking Down Prejudice” is one of the goals of Marquette County Habitat for Humanity’s annual Women Build event.
All genders are welcome to participate, but Women Build focuses on advancing women and gender equality.
Such is the case with this year’s house at 1718 Woodland Ave., where participants are scheduled to participate in Women Build through Saturday.
MCHFH executive director Deanna Johnson, who was at the event on Thursday, said Women Build activities were to include vinyl siding and, weather permitting, work on the porch.
“To be selected in our program, you must have a housing need”, says Johnson.
“You must be willing to partner with us, and you must be low income but have enough income to pay a mortgage.”
Not all Habitat cases are the same.
“The need can manifest itself in many ways”, says Johnson. “You may be in an overpriced place. It may be too small. There could be dangerous conditions.
Part of Habitat for Humanity’s mission, however, involves partnerships.
“Willingness to partner means doing things like this, with the media, and also helping build your own home or other projects in the community on behalf of Habitat,” she says.
Learning job skills is another benefit of working on a Habitat home.
On Thursday at the Woodland site, Amy Stephens, Program Support Specialist for Habitat, hosted Women Build.
“It was cool to do construction too,” said Stephens, who admitted never having done it before. “I love working with my hands and am happy to be here today to help take it to the next stage of completion.”
Johnson said the hope was for the house to be completed by the fall.
The partner family of the house is Angela Flynn and her two children. Flynn participated in Women Build as part of the financial contribution that Habitat owners invested in their new residences.
“This is my home – just excited to have our own home and finally own it,” Flynn said.
