HBO Max on the verge of losing 5 million Amazon subscribers
HBO Max is likely to lose 5 million customers with its release from Amazon Prime Video Channels, but the channel sees this departure as a short-term problem that will pay off in the future.
Andy Forssell, Managing Director of HBO Max, explained the rationale behind his company’s decision to leave Channels, an aggregate subscription platform that has helped HBO grow but limited its ability to build direct relationships with them. clients.
“It’s important for us to own the customer,” he explained. “If the viewer is in the app, we can tailor the home page to them. We can adapt what they show them next. We can respond to them in real time.
HBO Max’s strategic decision to leave Amazon Channels was made by WarnerMedia and they warned there would be an impact on domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers in the third quarter.
The potential impact has already been factored into the company’s full-year global subscriber forecast, which places HBO and HBO Max between 70 million and 73 million global subscribers by the end of 2021.
Those numbers put HBO and HBO Max behind Disney +, which is well over 100 million at this point, but consumers have shown their willingness to pay for access to HBO’s award-winning series and feature films Warner Bros. (VOD) and Star Wars, the Marvel MCU and classic Disney programming.
WarnerMedia has not stood idly by and already has a new agreement for subscribers.
As of September 15, HBO is not available as a subscription via Amazon Prime Video Channels. However, old subscribers shouldn’t miss their favorite HBO shows.
